From 1993 onwards, Martha’s work as a choreographer and director centered on the creation of large-scale, site-specific performances. These productions united professional artists with local community members to explore the unique identity of each location. From the mussel boats of Wexford, Ireland, to the Brooklyn waterfront in Red Hook, the trainyards of Lincoln, Nebraska to MASS MoCA’s industrial buildings, her works acted as “liminal portals,” offering multi-faceted perspectives on each community’s past, present, and future.
